I think many of the reasons for a pre-teen (12 year-old) and teenager to become PTA members are the same reason we give adults…just in slightly different order! The national PTA website has in-depth and detailed reasons for joining the PTA but here are some bullet points.
WHY BECOME A MEMBER OF PTA?
· As a paying member of your local PTA, you will have a say in what projects your PTA should pursue and how money should be spent.
· As a PTA member you become a part of the solution and not a part of the problem plagued by schools. You are actively working to make things better for your fellow students.
· As a PTA member you are eligible to attend local, regional, state and national PTA meetings. Who better to advocate for youth than a young person?
· PTA members can access on-line training through the national PTA website. On-line training includes courses in Leadership Fundamentals, Advocacy, Diversity and PTA Program Essentials. There is no cost for PTA members. (You will need a log-in and password to access certain programs on the national website.)
· As a member of PTA, you are learning leadership skills that will help you in school and in your chosen career.
· PTA membership looks great on a college or job application! A person is never too young to learn about community service and that is the sort of things colleges and scholarship committees are looking for.
· Several businesses provide discounts to PTA members. Some of the businesses are T-Mobile, Sharp Electronics and Office Max.
· PTA members can Twitter, Facebook and join in blogs on the national website. What a great way to get ideas for your unit and learn what other areas of the country are doing!
